Fourth of July is the holiday that commemorates the Second Continental Congress with the Declaration of Independence of July 4, 1776, a document that announced the separation of the colonies from Great Britain.

Quoting ABC News, a year later, according to the Library of Congress, a spontaneous celebration in Philadelphia marked the anniversary of America’s independence.

But throughout this developing nation, celebrations did not become commonplace until after the War of 1812. It quickly expanded: The Library of Congress records major historic events of the 19th century, such as the groundbreaking ceremony of the Erie Canal and the Railroad. Baltimore and Ohio, scheduled to coincide with the Fourth of July celebrations.
